With the name Loreley people associated, many centuries long,
a steep rising slate rock situated above of St. Goarshausen on the Rhine river.
It is said that dwarfs, nymphs and ghosts used to live in the fissures
of the rock and that you could hear their voices in the echoes and in the rush of the river.
In the year 1801,the name "Loreley" came up, associated with a woman, for the first time in a ballad of the romantic poet Clemens Brentano.
In this case her "real" name was Lore Lay, who was a woman in love, but unhappy.
She came from Bacharach and every man was fascinated by her beauty. |

Today people still enjoy to get bewitched by a "pretty sorceress", even though it is because of a different reason than 200 years ago.
In former times the thought of a romantic movement was the reason for the magic surrounding the Loreley.
Today it is more an individual feeling, which we also call romantic.
Even today the woman Loreley is associated very strong with the "Middlerhine" and exactly the other way too. |

| The signs carved into the top of the Loreley rock were made out of the concept of the countryside architect Dirk Melzer and designed by Silvia Beck, and these signs represent the extraordinary of this place. |

Questions and answers
In former times, the echo of the river was used as an oracle. Small dwarfs, the so called "edel wichtelin", like it is written in old books, then answered these questions. |

The "Loreley song" even outlasted the so called "brown years(the 3rd Reich)" beginning in the year 1933. "Author unknown" that is what was written in the books, because the Jewish Heinrich Heine should be erased out of the minds of the people, that is what the Nazis wanted to achieve. |

Nothing remains the same. In the almost "dead" Rhine river the fish came back long time ago. Only the fishermen are not very happy.
The wine cultivation rocky delicacies decreases, the inquiry for the rare Loreley - Riesling wine increases. |
